For those of us who may be a bit too young to remember (also known as those of us who make me feel old), back in the late 80s and up through the 90s there was a popular sitcom on television called Seinfeld, which followed the antics of an apathetic comedian and his quirky and dysfunctional friends as they navigated life in New York City. Toward the end of the series there was one particular episode of note, entitled “The Betrayal.” It was an unusual episode because the entire thing began at the end and worked its way backward scene by scene—while still maintaining a coherent and humorous story line.
Write a short story, starting at the end and working your way backward through it. Make sure that, despite the opposing direction you’re taking with a linear story line, any questions that a potential audience would be asking at the end are answered and pieced together clearly by the time they get to the beginning.
And have fun with it!
